🎶 The Singer as Artist or Craftsman

Jen often listens to her favorite songs on NetEase Cloud Music. To me, though, many of them feel flat. It’s not that the singers lack skill—their voices are clear and controlled—but rather that their songs seem to miss something deeper, a kind of emotional soul. They sing as if their entire attention is fixed on shaping every note, while the story within the lyrics quietly slips away.

The sound is clean, precise—like a finely composed photograph: beautiful, yet cold, without breath or life. Today, I deliberately chose a few songs that truly move me, and the contrast became striking. In those performances, the singer doesn’t simply execute; they enter the emotional space of the song. They breathe the feeling first, and let their voice become its natural expression.

Singers who leave no impression often resemble craftsmen completing a technical task: rhythm precise, breath steady, tone perfect—but soul absent. Rhythm and pitch matter, of course. Yet only when those elements become second nature, and emotion takes the lead, can music truly reach the heart.

This is the difference between a painter and a craftsman. A painter begins with vision—with emotion, story, or something they must express. The brush is merely an extension of that feeling. Even if the lines are rough or the colors clash, the painting still vibrates with life. A craftsman, by contrast, pursues correctness: lines straight, shading balanced, composition flawless. They reproduce form, not spirit. The result may be perfect—but lifeless.

Music works the same way. Some singers sing notes; others sing life. The former polish sound; the latter transmit soul.

Li Yugang’s performances move us because he sings not only with technique, but with the consciousness of a character. Chisato Moritaka’s rendition of Chihiro’s Song resonates because she sings the weight of memory and tenderness. Many imitators and online singers may have beautiful voices, yet they remain craftsmen—technically gifted, but spiritually absent.

Art has never been about stacking technique. It is emotion in motion. Only when an artist allows themselves to be truly moved—and then channels that feeling through skill—does the voice become real, and the creation come alive.
